China gets diabetes.

9.7% (90 million) of adults in China have diabetes, while another 15.5% (150 million) have prediabetes, according to a study published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr Wenying Yang and others tested over 46,000 people across China for glucose tolerance and fasting glucose levels.

The prevalence of diabetes was higher among urban residents than rural residents, a pattern seen in other developing countries.

The authors concluded “These results indicate that diabetes has become a major public health problem in China and that strategies aimed at the prevention and treatment of diabetes are needed.”
