Dr Bruce Pollock. Between days 4 and 6 after birth, women’s level of MAO-A (monoamine oxidase A) was found to be over 40% higher than in women not recently pregnant.

MAO-A removes ‘happy’ chemicals like serotonin, hence the depression.

The second generation of anti-depressants were called monoamine oxidase inhibitors because of the way they worked. These included Marplan, Nardil, Parnate and Manerix. Important side effects limit current use of these considerably.
