Windshield water risk.

The UK Health Protection Agency (HPA) has found that windshield (windscreen) water is linked to an increased risk of Legionnaire’s disease.

Legionnaire’s disease is rare, but fatal in around 1 in 7 cases.

The HPA estimated that windshield water could be the source of about 20% of cases in England and Wales.

They compared around 70 cases of Legionnaire’s disease with the same number of controls.

They found that a lot of driving through industrialised areas increased the risk factor 7 fold, while using water without added screen wash had a nearly 50 fold increased risk.

The antibacterial agents in screen wash appear to kill the Legionella bacteria responsible, as the HPA could not find an instance of Legionella in vehicles using screenwash.
