Low fat or low carb?

Dr Raymond Plodkowski compared low fat v low carbs in a 12 week small scale study of obese women with insulin resistance. He found low carbs lead to more weight loss than low fat.

Low fat was 60% of calories from carbs, 20% from fat and 20% from protein.

Low carbs was 45% from carbs, 20% from protein and 35% from fat, mainly unsaturated fat.

Both groups were on a calorie-restricted regime, but the women in the low carbs group lost just over 20% more than those in the low fat group.

The study results were presented at The Endocrine Society’s 92nd Annual Meeting in San Diego.

The study was funded by Jenny Craig, the ready-prepared meals diet company.
