Obese but healthy?

Dr André van Beek studied more than 1,300 Dutch obese people for over 7 years.

Nearly 7% of these were metabolically healthy (no history of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure or diabetes, and blood fat results in normal range without using drugs).

Over the 7 year period, only one of these ‘protected’ obese individuals developed cardiovascular disease, which is a rate comparable to non-obese people.

Experts are wary that the 7 year period is too short to be conclusive. But one commented “Clearly we need to know why some overweight and obese individuals are protected from metabolic deterioration and increased cardiovascular risk.”
