Get up! Stand up!

“Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!” sang Bob Marley.

According to Dr Alpa V Patel not getting up/standing up in your leisure time is killing you.

But you have to do quite a lot of not standing up in your free time – 6 hrs!

So if you happen to be lucky enough to have a quarter of your day free AND you spend it sitting down, it looks like like you are checking out sooner rather than later.

‘Active’ women (6 hours sitting but busy otherwise) – death rate up 40%. ‘Inactive’ women (6 hours leisure time sitting plus inactive work time) more than double this death risk.

For some reason, men have about half the risk of women, in both cases.

The authors conclude that “Public health messages and guidelines should be refined to include reducing time spent sitting in addition to promoting physical activity”.

There are other studies which suggest that getting up and active every half hour or so gets your key processes up and running again. Which may explain why we can teach our kids while they sit down for hours on end, with just short breaks.
