Why trust works.

Prof J Mark Weber has tried to find out why people who are naturally inclined to trust others fare better than those with low trust.

First, people took a very simple test that shows how much they trust others. It’s simple, but it has been shown to be accurate.

Then the people were asked to rate ‘job candidates’, on video-taped interviews.

Half of the candidates had been told to be 100% truthful. Half had been told they should make up 3 attractive but believable lies to increase their chances of getting the job.

What was the difference?

Raters who had scored low on trust found it tough to spot who was lying. Basically, they were suspicious of everyone.

Whereas, raters who had scored high on trust were more experienced in risk assessment, having taken more risks, because they trusted more people. And so, they were better at spotting the lies.
