R&D for Lifetime of Life

Networks, friends, gender.

Professors Gail M McGuire and William T Bielby studied the relationship patterns in one of the largest financial service organizations in the US.

They found that women received more social support, especially from other women, than men. However, the women were typically in lower-status positions and because of this they did not receive assistance that would help with future career goals.

Women have friends at work but not the networks to get ahead.

According to McGuire “We have laws that prohibit discrimination and enforce equal pay, but that only touches the surface. We need to look at informal professional structures, not formal ones. These are the real sources of inequality.”
