R&D for Lifetime of Life

Chili, diet, exercise.

Dr Stuart M Phillips tested chili extract in healthy young men when at rest and when exercising hard, to see what fuel they were burning.

At rest, the chili extract increased energy burn, and the fuel used shifted towards fat burning, as compared to controls.

During hard exercise, (extended cycling at a fair rate), there was little difference between the chili group and the control group. So any effects produced by the chilis were being swamped by the effects of exercise.

One subtle but significant finding was that the chilis blunted the initial rise in blood lactate at the start of exercise, again suggesting a short period of fat burning in the chili group.

The team wondered whether a further test at a lower rate of exercise, say the equivalent of a 45-60 minute brisk walk, might produce a different result.
