R&D for Lifetime of Life

The water diet.

Dr Brenda Davy found that for those aged 55 plus, two glasses of water before each meal made dieting much more effective.

48 adults were randomly split into 2, with both groups on a low-fat, low-calorie diet. The only difference was the two glasses of water before each meal.

The control group lost 11lbs on average over 12 weeks. The water group lost 40% more, at 15.5lbs.

The team found from prior research that when middle-aged and older adults drank water before a meal, they ate between 75 and 90 fewer calories at the meal. They wanted to find out if people cmpensate by eating more during the rest of the day.

After one year, those who continued to drink water continued to lose a bit more – another 1.5 pounds on average.

However, prior research has shown that in those aged 18 to 35, drinking water before the meal did not cause them to eat fewer calories at the meal, as water empties from the stomach too quickly at this age.

The researchers presented their findings at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston.
