Black rice v blueberries.

Dr Zhimin Xu reported to a meeting of the Amercian Chemical Society that “A spoonful of black rice bran contains more health promoting anthocyanin antioxidants than are found in a spoonful of blueberries, but with less sugar and more fiber and vitamin E antioxidants.”

The anthocyanins which give the rice its colour also mean that black rice bran may be even healthier than brown rice bran, suggested Dr. Xu.

Black rice is used mainly in Asia for food decoration, noodles, sushi, and pudding. However Dr Xu was reporting on rice grown in the southern US, in his role as associate professor at the Department of Food Science at Louisiana State University Agricultural Center in Baton Rouge.
