Pomegranites v antioxidants.

As the season of pomegranites reaches the northern hemispere, have a quick look at the findings from Prof Navindara P Seeram of UCLA from a couple of years ago.

The title of the research paper was “Comparison of Antioxidant Potency of Commonly Consumed Polyphenol-Rich Beverages in the United States”. Or, how do the antiooxidants shape up?

On 4 tests of anti-oxidant effect, Seeram and team found the following. “Pomegranite juice had the greatest antioxidant potency composite index among the beverages tested and was at least 20% greater than any of the other beverages tested.”

Seeram came up with the following order for the antioxidant capacity of the drinks – pomegranite juice > red wine > Concord grape juice > blueberry juice > black cherry juice, açaí juice, cranberry juice > orange juice, iced tea beverages, apple juice.

Seeram’s test were about responses in a lab dish. But you can ty it out easily in real life – try a pomegranite.
