Happy gossip.

Gossip can be used in 2 key ways to improve your happiness, according to results presented by Dr Jennifer Cole to a meeting of the British Psychological Association.

First, people who talked about others more frequently reported greater feelings of social support.

This is important as other research has found that living in a city leads to lower involvement in social networks, which in turn is linked to a higher risk of mental illness. So social support is good.

Second, Dr Cole found that people who talked about a (fictional) person in positive terms had higher temporary levels of self-esteem than those who used negative terms.

According to Dr Cole “Gossiping, particularly of the type where people praise others, could be linked with some desirable outcomes for the gossiper.”
