US approves new gout drug.

Pegloticase (Krystexxa) has been approved in the US for treatment of gout that is resistant to other medicines (which occurs in around 3% of patients).

The drug helps break down uric acid to a harmless chemical that is excreted in urine.

The trials in humans found high levels of side-effects. These included severe allergic reaction in 25% of patients, which requires the prescription of other medicines to avoid this.
